CountOrSell
CountOrSell is Live in Alpha
If you’ve followed my work at Dark Grotto, you know that my day-to-day lives somewhere in the deep end of the pool — cybersecurity program development, IT strategy, executive leadership advisory, and helping startups figure out how not to implode. It’s serious work; I am honored by the trust that these organizations place in me and I make sure they’re getting quality advice informed by decades of experience to help them navigate the routine and the risky.
But here’s the thing about consultants: the problems we solve aren’t always the ones on the org chart. Sometimes a gap exists, nobody has filled it, and the itch to build something useful becomes impossible to ignore.
CountOrSell started exactly that way: as a personal tool born out of frustration, built the same way I’d build anything else: with care, with intention, and with an eye toward something genuinely worth using.
Whether I’m advising a startup on their security posture or shipping a hobby app for Magic: The Gathering collectors, the standard doesn’t change. I’d rather release something I’m proud of slowly than something sloppy quickly. Which is why today feels like a good day, because I think this one is ready to meet the world.
After a lot of late nights, playtesting (the app, not the cards… okay, maybe the cards too), and more spreadsheet-induced headaches than I care to admit, I’m thrilled to announce that CountOrSell is officially available as an alpha build at https://www.countorsell.com!
So, What Is CountOrSell?
If you’ve ever stared at a binder full of Magic: The Gathering cards and thought “I have no idea what I actually own or what any of this is worth” then this one’s for you.
CountOrSell is a self-hosted web application built specifically for MTG collectors. It gives you a clean, organized way to track your collection across all the things that matter:
- Cards per set: Know exactly what you have and what you’re missing
- The Reserved List: Keep tabs on your most precious, never-to-be-reprinted staples
- Booster packs: Yes, your sealed product counts too
- Professionally graded (slabbed) cards: Because that PSA 10 Black Lotus deserves its own row in the database
One of the features I’m most proud of: CountOrSell caches all card and set data locally from Scryfall, which means after your initial sync, the app runs completely offline. No internet? No problem. Your collection data stays yours, on your machine, always accessible.
And of course I’m pretty proud of the name, too. :)
Why Alpha?
Alpha means this is real, working software — but it also means it’s still growing. There will be rough edges, features in progress, and the occasional bug that definitely wasn’t there yesterday. I’m releasing at this stage because I want real collectors using it, breaking it, and telling me what they need. Your feedback is going to shape where this goes.
What’s Coming Next? The roadmap is exciting. CountOrSell is currently available as a localhost application, but Android and iOS apps are in the works, so your collection tracker will eventually live right in your pocket, ready for the next card show or local game store visit.
Try It Out Head over to https://www.countorsell.com to get started. If you run into anything weird, have a feature request, or just want to say hi, I’d love to hear from you.
Here’s to knowing exactly whether to count ’em or sell ’em.
